Being a native of Kerala, I always admire the diversity of Bangalore, especially the modernist architecture, food pubs, and people's attitudes. However, as I explore the city's other sides, I realize that this is not the true Bangalore.
For the last couple of months, bangaloreans where facing a common issue-Water Scarcity. The most depressing aspect is that a certain percentage of individuals rely on malls for every day necessities.Water tanker lorries and empty pots have become a regular sight on Bangalore's roads.
Today, I want to share another story. It revolves around a group of people who are still deprived of their basic needs, and unfortunately, no one seems to care about their plight.
My awareness of this issue began during my 7:00 AM classes. Yes, those early morning sessions were the catalyst. Whenever our mentor announced a 7:00 AM class for the next day, my reaction was often a groan of frustration: “Oh man, not again…….

Being perpetually late for my first period, I would rush to Richmond Circle. However, there was a recurring scene that caught my attention during these early classes: a sizable crowd gathered around certain private pipes. Strangely, I never witnessed this phenomenon during my 8:00 AM classes. The mystery lingered in my mind, but it took me two years to gather the courage to ask those people about it.
These people reside in the slums near Richmond Circle. While Richmond Circle is known for its luxury, it doesn’t extend to everyone. When I shared information about the slums with my friends, their expressions revealed surprise—they had been unaware of this area until that moment.
One weekend, I visited the slum area. It was guarded by a large, rusty gate, but surprisingly, it was open. Inside, I engaged in conversation with the residents, most of whom were Kannada speakers. Despite my good proficiency in Kannada, I struggled to understand their words. Determined, I returned the next day with a Kannada-speaking friend. The answers I received were truly shocking.
Every day, regardless of gender or age, they wake up at 4:00 AM. Their routine involves going to nearby private and public properties to collect water. Unfortunately, some private property owners cut off the water supply after 7:30 AM, leaving them without water. This dire situation characterizes the overall condition of the slum.
When I had a conversation with them, there were like "We are tired of asking help from others,Its our fate only No- one can change that.
In arena the most vulnerable were the children. The hands that should hold pencil and books were burdened with pots and pans. Every morning they are waking up with a anxiety that they get enough water for the day rather than being tensed about homework or education.
They are facing not only the water issue, they don’t even have proper facility for electricity and sanitation as well.Womens were depending on BMTC bus stand for toilet service. When our country were thriving to attain development,a group of people were still denying there basic needs. How can we say that our country is a developing country, where a group of people where stuck in a time wrap.
For water facility that they are depending on the adjacent flat owners, but sometimes they get a bad experience from them.A lady told me that Once a flat owner was tried to hit them when they take water from their tap.
The most crucial aspect is that most of them participated in the previous election. Within the slum, I could discern a mix of anger, resilience, and acceptance. As the sun retreated, the entire city bathed in colorful lights, but this slum remained cloaked in shadows cast by their kerosene lamps. The most heart-wrenching part was when the children confided, ‘Anna, once evening descends, we are left in darkness, and it adversely affects our studies.
I don’t have a proper answer to that question. But I believe that there will be a day that each child from that slum were don’t want to worry about the water.I looking forward for that day.
